In the latest release OpenPlantModeler 10.11.00.260 the functionality to group items has been removed.
These commands grouped selected items to make it easier to pick when multiple components existed in complex models.
Command were executed using the Ctrl + G to group and Ctrl + U to ungroup.
| How frequently will feature be used? | A few times a day |
| How much time will you save? | Time saving is dependent on the complexity of the model but can be couple of minutes a day. In our application we pick items and group them to avoid individually picking them in futre. |

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I use group and ungroup elements all the time when modeling equipment, but I NEVER group OPM elements amongst them, which I understand was the reason for disabling the function. Since you removed them I've been doing all my equipment modeling in the V8i version of OPM. I will be very glad to see this functionality return.
Hi Waqas
That is the best news EVER!!! Thank you for sharing.
Do you have a timeline on the next release? Just rough idea when... I know you cannot give exact dates.
Need to share that with my team, I think we will all be celebrating today!!!
The Group and Ungroup functionality will be brought back in the next release with support for MicroStation elements only.
Hi Bentley Team,
I would like to request that the Group command be brought back into the OpenPlant Modeler (OPM) 2024 versions. The Group functionality is an essential part of many users’ modeling workflows, especially when organizing complex assemblies, managing temporary selections, and improving productivity during design revisions.
Its absence in the 2024 releases creates noticeable inefficiencies and impacts everyday modeling tasks that were previously streamlined. Restoring this command—or providing an equivalent alternative with the same ease of use—would significantly enhance usability and maintain continuity for long-time OpenPlant users.
Thank you for considering this request. Your continued improvements to the software are greatly appreciated.
Dear Development Team
Please can this item get higher priority, we are wasting so much time selecting items individually.
Please bring these commands back. Ridiculous to remove such an important feature for modelers.
Microstation still has it, openplant doesn't. What gives?
Just checked the release notes and known issues of OPM 2024.2 and it STILL is not brought back.
More than two years now. SMH.
What keeps you from bringing it back?
The programm can distinguish between OPM elements and other "normal" MicroStation elements. Just limit the function to only included non-OPM and that is it.
Dear Bentley
Do you have any idea on when we will be seeing the function back, it is really painful not having it and a lot of time is spent in selecting things over and over.
Please guys... push this up the priority chain and help us with productivity
Bentley don't care about there customers, they'll remove features to keep you upgrading.... Oh yes that's an enhancement but may be fixed in 2 major versions from now
Yes it's now Aug 2024 an dthis still hasn't been implemented. OI'm using update 11.2.
Bentley listen to your customers!
The grouping/ungrouping command Alt-g/u is something I use daily! Please bring it back... our models always contain basic solid components and its so frustrating not being able to group them easily.
Why this????
Is a MicroStation's feature very useful.
Please bring back this tool ASAP
Simply... please, bring this important function back ASAP.
Thank you.
Hello,
Any update about this tool? As for our work and our suppliers also this is an important needed fix. We find ourselfs around issues cause we need such feature or a similar one on our models with OPM
Thanks
Bring this function back. ASAP.
We are still working with Update 9 and we will not upgrade until this functionality is back.
Please return it ASAP!!!
Оr give any other solution or loading dll or something else. Users work with specific versions and cannot switch or jump from version to version just because they have already configured some settings
This is a great example of how you can take a well-functioning feature and mess it up or remove it because someone else thought it was a good choice. Users have been asking for some functionality for more than 5 years and it has not yet been implemented, but what worked stably disappeared very quickly.
Thanks Skyper for your feedback.
Will it be helpful if we add this functionality in OPM i.e. it doesn't works for OPM elements and only works for MicroStation elements.
Hi Waqas
That would mean that you would need to exit OPM, start it up in MS Mode do the grouping, close the application, then open OPM and go on. Not practical as this will take time in larger models.
How does Bentley intend to make us of Item Types in OPM with this limitation, or will that function also be removed as I do not see how it practically will work as item types does not always exist as a single component.
This function has been around since the dawn of time, I think every user has corrupted OPM data by grouping it and learnt the lesson, but maybe other users can give their input.
Loosing this function is really painful.
Thanks Spyker for your feedback.
Will it help if we just enable the Group functionality in MicroStation Mode and keep it disabled in OPM, as it doesn't works for OPM components and user may end up corrupting the data.
